Unveiling the largest Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) transformer with rating of up to 180MVA by Arya Transfo Industrial Group for Bafgh Mineral Complex Iron & Steel Industry Company (BMISCO)
In February 2025, Arya Transfo Industrial Group hosted the unveiling ceremony of the largest electric arc furnace transformer manufactured in Iran.
The ceremony, held at Arya Transfo Industrial Group’s manufacturing facilities, was attended by the Governor of Semnan Province, and leading executives from Iran’s steel and power industries.
For the Electric Arc Furnace transformer manufac tured for installation in the steelmaking facility, the latest technologies in furnace transformer design and manufacturing have been utilized. All special operational requirements have been considered throughout the service life of the transformer. In accordance with customer requirements, the following features have been incorporated:
- Indirect voltage regulation (Booster-Type Design)
- Secondary-side terminals mounted on the transformer cover
- State-of-the-art winding manufacturing
- techniques to enhance safety margin and service life
- Optimized cooling system with exceptionally high heat-transfer efficiency utilizing water-cooled heat exchangers
- Precise magnetic design to maximize transformer lifetime
Raw Materials and Equipment
Special attention to the operating challenges of EAF transformers and severe operating conditions has resulted in the use of premium raw materials and auxiliary equipment. As these transformers are considered the heart of a steelmaking plant, no compromise is accepted regarding material quality. The major equipment used in this transformer includes:
- Secondary-side busbars with superior quality, high mechanical strength, and excellent heat-transfer capability
- Indirect current measurement system for electrode currents
- Vacuum-type on-load tap changer (MR, Germany)
- High-temperature-resistant silicone gaskets for sealing applications
- Heat exchangers and pumps supplied by Boldrocchi, Italy
- Optimized arrangement of coolers and cooling circuits for maximum efficiency
- Online transformer monitoring system supplied by MR, Germany
Testing
Testing of this class of transformer requires specialized laboratory facilities. Due to the extremely high secondary currents, short-circuit testing requires extensive copper interconnections. Accordingly, the High Voltage Laboratory of Arya Transfo Industrial Group is equipped to perform routine, type and special tests dedicated to this class of furnace transformers. Although the customer specified a continuous overload capability of 10%, the transformer design margin and test results demonstrate the capability to withstand at least 13% continuous overload.
